Since April 2024, the bar\u00adges DARSS and ZINGST have been in ser\u00advice on the \u201cExpan\u00adsion of the Kiel Canal Eas\u00adtern Sec\u00adtion\u201d pro\u00adject. The con\u00adsor\u00adtium car\u00adry\u00ading out the pro\u00adject has char\u00adte\u00adred the bar\u00adges for a period of around 40 weeks.
The Kiel Canal is the busiest arti\u00adfi\u00adcial sea route in the world and a life\u00adline for Euro\u00adpean freight traf\u00adfic. Eco\u00adno\u00admic\u00adally, it plays an important role for the whole of Schles\u00adwig-Hol\u00adstein, the metro\u00adpo\u00adlis of Ham\u00adburg and for the com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adti\u00adve\u00adness of the Ger\u00adman seaports. <\/p>\n\n

Com\u00adple\u00adted in 1895, the NOK has alre\u00adady been adapted seve\u00adral times due to the gro\u00adwing requi\u00adre\u00adments and dimen\u00adsi\u00adons of ship\u00adping. The Fede\u00adral Water\u00adways and Ship\u00adping Admi\u00adnis\u00adtra\u00adtion is expan\u00adding the NOK in the area from Gro\u00df\u00adk\u00f6\u00adnigs\u00adf\u00f6rde to Kiel Hol\u00adtenau. The expan\u00adsion will ensure relia\u00adble pas\u00adsage times for ship\u00adping and the canal is well pre\u00adpared for the ship\u00adping traf\u00adfic of the future.

The main task of the bar\u00adges DARRS and ZINGST is to remove part of the appro\u00adxi\u00adm\u00adately 6.8 mil\u00adlion cubic meters of wet and dry excava\u00adted mate\u00adrial pro\u00addu\u00adced during the canal expan\u00adsion. The uncon\u00adta\u00admi\u00adna\u00adted dred\u00adging spoil is trans\u00adpor\u00adted to a dum\u00adping area in the Bal\u00adtic Sea and depo\u00adsi\u00adted there. <\/p>\n\n
