After four years of con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion in the moun\u00adtain near Rothen\u00adstein, the new Rothen\u00adstein tun\u00adnel on the B88 was ope\u00adned on August 25, 2022. A cerem\u00adony was held to mark its inclu\u00adsion as the latest tun\u00adnel in the 40-kilo\u00admetre road tun\u00adnel sys\u00adtem in Thu\u00adrin\u00adgia. The Rothen\u00adstein tun\u00adnel was open to the public for the last time on foot and in peace and quiet before it was ope\u00adned to traf\u00adfic, lite\u00adrally with \u201ctrumpets and drums\u201d. This marked the com\u00adple\u00adtion of the twelfth road tun\u00adnel in Thuringia. <\/p>\n\n

The 385-metre-long tun\u00adnel is the most important part of the Rothen\u00adstein bypass. Plan\u00adning for the bypass dates back as far as 1993. Accor\u00adding to the State Office for Con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion and Trans\u00adport, the Rothen\u00adstein tun\u00adnel has now been ope\u00adned at a cost of EUR 58 mil\u00adlion. In future, dri\u00advers will only need around five minu\u00adtes to get from the A4 Jena-G\u00f6sch\u00adwitz junc\u00adtion to Kahla. For the time being, the speed limit here is 60 km\/h \u2014 but this is to be increased to 80 km\/h at a later date. <\/p>\n\n

The pro\u00adject ulti\u00adm\u00adately tur\u00adned out to be more chal\u00adlen\u00adging than expec\u00adted during the con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion period. Among other things, there were con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion delays due to neces\u00adsary resche\u00addu\u00adling and it also tur\u00adned out that the rock being explo\u00adred had a dif\u00adfe\u00adrent com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion than initi\u00adally assu\u00admed. At the end of the tun\u00adnel towards Rudol\u00adstadt, it crum\u00adbled like sand in places. As a result, blas\u00adting could not be car\u00adried out here and a mil\u00adling machine had to be used ins\u00adtead. In addi\u00adtion, a con\u00adcrete anchor had to pro\u00advide the neces\u00adsary sta\u00adbi\u00adlity for the portal. <\/p>\n\n

Despite all the adver\u00adsity, the Rothen\u00adstein tun\u00adnel was finally able to be put into ope\u00adra\u00adtion, which was also a great relief for the resi\u00addents of Oel\u00adknitz. On the evening of the ope\u00adning, they were able to bid fare\u00adwell to deca\u00addes of through traf\u00adfic with a spon\u00adta\u00adneous street party. <\/p>\n\n

In a joint ven\u00adture with the com\u00adpany STREICHER Tief- und Inge\u00adnieur\u00adbau Jena GmbH & Co. KG, the 2.6 km long con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion lot was suc\u00adcessfully com\u00adple\u00adted after a 4\u2011year con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion period.<\/p>\n\n
