The over\u00adall pro\u00adject ser\u00adves to bypass the Schwarz\u00adkopf tun\u00adnel. Bet\u00adween Lauf\u00adach and Hei\u00adgen\u00adbr\u00fc\u00adcken, a 926-metre-long tun\u00adnel pas\u00adses under the Schwarz\u00adkopf. Despite mul\u00adti\u00adple reno\u00adva\u00adtions, a high level of main\u00adten\u00adance is requi\u00adred to keep the appro\u00adxi\u00adm\u00adately 160-year-old tun\u00adnel in ope\u00adra\u00adtion. The steep incline of the route in this area, which is more than 20 per thousand in places, also requi\u00adres pushing ope\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons for heavy freight trains. <\/p>\n\n

Tog\u00ade\u00adther with the maxi\u00admum per\u00admit\u00adted speed of 70 kilo\u00adme\u00adters per hour, this leads to dis\u00adrup\u00adti\u00adons in ope\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons and makes the tun\u00adnel a bot\u00adt\u00adlen\u00adeck in the traf\u00adfic net\u00adwork. A fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal rene\u00adwal of the tun\u00adnel would only be tech\u00adni\u00adcally fea\u00adsi\u00adble at great expense and is the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfore not eco\u00adno\u00admic\u00adally viable. <\/p>\n\n

Deut\u00adsche Bahn has the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfore deci\u00added to build a bypass around the Schwarz\u00adkopf Tun\u00adnel. The so-cal\u00adled \u201cdou\u00adble-track bypass\u201d has pro\u00adven to be the most cost-effec\u00adtive alter\u00adna\u00adtive route. This is around eight kilo\u00adme\u00adters long and devia\u00adtes from the exis\u00adting route by a maxi\u00admum of 500 meters. It runs mainly in a tun\u00adnel in an east-west direc\u00adtion in the muni\u00adci\u00adpal areas of Hei\u00adgen\u00adbr\u00fc\u00adcken and Lauf\u00adach. A total of four tun\u00adnels will be built in the plan\u00adning appr\u00adoval sec\u00adtion (PFA) 3 bet\u00adween Lauf\u00adach and Heigenbr\u00fccken. <\/p>\n\n

The new route enables a flat ali\u00adgnment so that the maxi\u00admum per\u00admit\u00adted speed can be increased to 150 kilo\u00adme\u00adters per hour. Due to the fact that most of the line is in a tun\u00adnel, noise emis\u00adsi\u00adons along the route will be signi\u00adfi\u00adcantly redu\u00adced and the popu\u00adla\u00adtion in Hei\u00adgen\u00adbr\u00fc\u00adcken, Hain and Lauf\u00adach will be con\u00adsider\u00ada\u00adbly reli\u00ade\u00adved of rail noise in future. The relief in Hei\u00adgen\u00adbr\u00fc\u00adcken will be par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlarly signi\u00adfi\u00adcant, as the con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion of the new route will eli\u00admi\u00adnate rail traf\u00adfic within the town. <\/p>\n\n

The pro\u00adject com\u00adpri\u00adses the con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion of five sin\u00adgle-track tun\u00adnels using the mining method (approx. 7,000 m), the con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion of one sin\u00adgle-track and one dou\u00adble-track tun\u00adnel using the cut-and-cover method (approx. 600 m and approx. 800 m respec\u00adtively) as well as various engi\u00adnee\u00adring struc\u00adtures and a stop\u00adping point inclu\u00adding super\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adture work.<\/p>\n\n
