Alfred Kunz Unter\u00adta\u00adge\u00adbau and its part\u00adner are pre\u00adpa\u00adring the dou\u00adble-track, 450-metre-long Kuckucks\u00adlay rail\u00adroad tun\u00adnel, which dates back to 1871, for the expan\u00adsion of the rail\u00adroad line to the modern track spa\u00adcing of 4.00 m by widening the old tun\u00adnel struc\u00adture from the impe\u00adrial&nbsp;era.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In order to main\u00adtain rail ope\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons, the tun\u00adnel widening work is being car\u00adried out with the help of a tun\u00adnel widening por\u00adtal as well as advance pro\u00adtec\u00adtive enclo\u00adsures with the pos\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adlity of pas\u00adsing through in sin\u00adgle-track rail ope\u00adra\u00adtion. This tun\u00adnel-in-tun\u00adnel con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion method invol\u00adves remo\u00adving the old tun\u00adnel masonry under a rol\u00adling wheel out\u00adside the pro\u00adtec\u00adtive enclo\u00adsure using a chisel and then remo\u00adving the \u2018fresh\u2019 sand\u00adstone using blas\u00adting. For this work, the tun\u00adnel exten\u00adsion por\u00adtal was equip\u00adped with two hydrau\u00adlic demo\u00adli\u00adtion ham\u00admers and two dril\u00adling flaps. A steel armor rein\u00adforce\u00adment in the blas\u00adting area pro\u00advi\u00added opti\u00admum pro\u00adtec\u00adtion for track sys\u00adtems and rail ope\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons during both mecha\u00adni\u00adcal chise\u00adling and blas\u00adting. The dif\u00adfe\u00adrent excava\u00adtion methods, mecha\u00adni\u00adcal and explo\u00adsion-based, are neces\u00adsary to ensure the hig\u00adhest pos\u00adsi\u00adble level of safety for rail\u00adroad ope\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons and employees as well as an envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtally fri\u00adendly sepa\u00adra\u00adtion of the con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion mate\u00adri\u00adals old masonry and sandstone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In addi\u00adtion to the cram\u00adped con\u00addi\u00adti\u00adons close to the track in the space bet\u00adween the field and the pro\u00adtec\u00adtive enclo\u00adsure, the hand\u00adling of the tar-con\u00adtai\u00adning old seal\u00ading and back\u00adpack\u00ading of the exis\u00adting tun\u00adnel posed a chall\u00adenge. In order to pre\u00advent the toxic demo\u00adli\u00adtion waste from being car\u00adried over from the old masonry and to ensure the hig\u00adhest pos\u00adsi\u00adble level of envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal pro\u00adtec\u00adtion in the Kyll Val\u00adley water pro\u00adtec\u00adtion area, an inte\u00adrim manage\u00adment sys\u00adtem was instal\u00adled to sepa\u00adrate the dirty \u201cblack\u201d and clean \u201cwhite\u201d areas during the tun\u00adnel work. Spe\u00adcial machi\u00adnery from the mining indus\u00adtry, such as a loa\u00adder and a loa\u00adding machine with a loa\u00adding chute and loa\u00adding bucket, com\u00adple\u00admen\u00adted the mecha\u00adni\u00adcal excava\u00adtion, blas\u00adting and secu\u00adring work, which was car\u00adried out directly along\u00adside the track ope\u00adra\u00adtion and was gentle on the rock. The newly instal\u00adled tun\u00adnel inner shell after excava\u00adtion of the sand\u00adstone rock is desi\u00adgned as a water-imper\u00admeable rein\u00adforced con\u00adcrete con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion adapted to the rock pressure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Due to the wea\u00adthe\u00adring zones in the por\u00adtal areas, which had alre\u00adady been sub\u00adjec\u00adted to dis\u00adpla\u00adce\u00adment pres\u00adsu\u00adres and stres\u00adses from the con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion of the exis\u00adting tun\u00adnel in 1871, the two por\u00adtal struc\u00adtures were pro\u00advi\u00added with por\u00adtal covers. While the north por\u00adtal cover was foun\u00added on micro\u00adpi\u00adles, the south was foun\u00added on incli\u00adned tan\u00adgen\u00adtial bored piles. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, an old exis\u00adting retai\u00adning wall in the val\u00adley slope area of the tun\u00adnel apron that was in need of reno\u00adva\u00adtion was repla\u00adced. For this pur\u00adpose, a tan\u00adgen\u00adtial bored pile wall with a head beam was con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adted with a set\u00adback and suc\u00adces\u00adsi\u00advely ancho\u00adred back during the demo\u00adli\u00adtion work on the old exis\u00adting&nbsp;wall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The great chall\u00adenge of this pro\u00adject is made up of num\u00ade\u00adrous influen\u00adcing fac\u00adtors. In addi\u00adtion to the extre\u00admely cram\u00adped con\u00addi\u00adti\u00adons during the excava\u00adtion work, the need to main\u00adtain rail ope\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons led to con\u00adsidera\u00adble time, space and logi\u00adsti\u00adcal rest\u00adric\u00adtions. Tog\u00ade\u00adther with the com\u00adplex and sen\u00adsi\u00adtive hand\u00adling of the demo\u00adli\u00adtion mate\u00adrial \u2018old tun\u00adnel struc\u00adture\u2019 as hazar\u00addous waste, the reno\u00adva\u00adtion of the Kuckucks\u00adlay\u00adtun\u00adnel requi\u00adred an extre\u00admely high level of con\u00adcep\u00adtual con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion skills. On com\u00adple\u00adtion of the work, the engi\u00adneers and miners from Alfred Kunz seam\u00adlessly built on the achie\u00adve\u00adments of the tun\u00adnel\u2019s con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion in 1871 and crea\u00adted a con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary, high-qua\u00adlity and dura\u00adble tun\u00adnel structure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>TECHNICAL
