Another important education project for the city of Bremen is picking up speed: On October 13, 2025, the contracts for the new Georg Droste School for blind and visually impaired children and the Regional Counselling and Support Center (ReBUZ) East were signed in the presence of Finance Senator Björn Fecker.
As part of a public-private partnership (PPP), August Reiners Bauunternehmung GmbH will implement the construction project as the total contractor. Immobilien Bremen is responsible for project management.
The new building is being constructed on the 16,000 square meter site of the former special school on Bardowickstraße in Bremen’s Vahr district. A gross floor area of around 7,800 square meters is planned, which will be specially tailored to the special needs of blind and visually impaired pupils. 33.5 million euros have been earmarked for the project, with completion scheduled for the 2028/29 school year.
Climate protection also plays an important role: the building will be equipped with a green roof and a photovoltaic system.
Architecture with meaning and structure
The planned school building takes into account the specific pedagogical requirements and differentiated usage concepts:
- Rooms with a clear structure and orientation make navigation easier for blind and visually impaired pupils.
- Strong contrasts and custom-fit furniture promote a safe and pleasant learning environment.
- For the teaching staff, meeting rooms, retreats for concentrated work and meeting rooms for discussions with parents are being created.
- New diagnostic and consultation rooms of different sizes and atmospheres are being created in the ReBUZ Ost area.
This new building is a place that combines functional architecture, inclusion and sustainability — a project that we at August Reiners are very committed to and proud to realize.
