The ARGE U5 Lot 1 team in Munich reached a milestone in March 2024 and produced the first cover for the extension of the U5 subway line to Pasing. Around 900 m³ of concrete was poured in a large-scale concreting operation. Due to the inner-city conditions and the difficult traffic access to the concrete, concreting was carried out all day from 07:00 to 20:00.
In the so-called diaphragm wall cover construction method, the cover (the later building ceiling) is constructed first and the sides are secured with a diaphragm wall. Excavation then takes place under the protection of this cover. This construction method has proved its worth in Munich for large road tunnels, as it means that traffic can be maintained above ground for the most part. This method is now being used again here for subway construction.
