Our “Neues Kaf­fee­quar­tier” con­s­truc­tion pro­ject in Bre­men’s Über­see­stadt dis­trict was awarded the Bre­men Housing Prize 2025. The prize is awarded to pro­jects that exem­plify how sus­tainable living space can be crea­ted in the state of Bre­men. The quar­ter com­bi­nes the his­to­ri­cal back­ground of the area with a con­tem­po­rary, urban living atmo­sphere. Small-scale buil­ding struc­tures, varia­ble apart­ment lay­outs and a deli­be­rate ope­ning to the public space create room for dif­fe­rent living models. The ori­en­ta­tion of the apart­ments towards the quiet mixed-use area streng­thens social inter­ac­tion and encou­ra­ges spon­ta­neous encoun­ters.
The jury was par­ti­cu­larly impres­sed by the suc­cessful inter­play of urban inte­gra­tion, social mixing and typo­lo­gi­cal deve­lo­p­ment. In terms of design, the dis­trict incor­po­ra­tes typi­cal ele­ments of old Bre­men archi­tec­ture and trans­la­tes them into a modern archi­tec­tu­ral lan­guage: clin­ker bricks, hori­zon­tal lines and cle­arly pro­por­tio­ned win­dows ensure reco­gniza­bi­lity wit­hout appearing his­to­ri­ci­zing. The traf­fic-cal­med mixed-use area deli­bera­tely focu­ses on com­mu­nity and trans­forms the street space into a lively mee­ting place.
We are deligh­ted with the award, which con­firms our claim to com­bine sus­tainable and afforda­ble urban deve­lo­p­ment with a respon­si­ble approach to the archi­tec­tu­ral heri­tage.
