A new ensemble of buildings is being built on Große Johannisstraße as an important part of the Neustadtswall campus of Bremen University of Applied Sciences and with a special urban impact. The aim is to realize a functional, efficient and at the same time identity-creating architecture that meets the high demands of teaching and research and is consistently geared towards sustainability and climate protection.

A central element of the project is the resource-conserving reuse of the existing building fabric. The reconstruction and modernization of the existing FS building preserves valuable “grey energy”. The existing skeleton structure is ideally suited for long-term use as a teaching and research building thanks to its flexible floor plans. The technical facilities on the roof will be extended to accommodate highly installed laboratories in the fields of bionics, environmental technology and mechanical engineering, among others, without significantly altering the existing load-bearing structure.

The new extension connects the existing FS and AB buildings with a new head building. It is predominantly realized as a modern precast concrete and reinforced concrete skeleton construction. Resource-saving prestressed concrete hollow core slabs significantly reduce the amount of concrete and steel required, enable larger spans and create open, flexible floor plans. This means that the building can also be adapted to changing requirements in the long term.

The building concept is complemented by durable, sustainably designed façades and greening measures. The new building ensemble thus makes an important contribution to the climate-friendly development of the campus and to strengthening the urban environment.
